July 27, 2026 – Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc / City of Kamloops

Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops are working together to protect a site in the City of Kamloops’s West End, South Shore neighbourhood area where ancestral remains were reported to the RCMP by a member of the public on July 15, 2026. Out of respect for the community, the ancestor, cultural protocols, and the ongoing process, no additional details are available at this time.

Kúkwpi7 Rosanne Casimir states, “The protection of our cultural heritage is a fundamental responsibility of Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc. Our people have lived throughout Secwepemcúl̓ecw since time immemorial, and we remain committed to ensuring our heritage, cultural laws, and traditional practices are respected. We will continue to uphold our inherent jurisdiction and Secwépemc values while working collaboratively to protect and preserve our shared cultural heritage. We appreciate the collaborative efforts of all those involved in supporting this important responsibility.”

Kúkwpi7 Rosanne Casimir would like to acknowledge the support of the City of Kamloops, which continues to be a great partner and friend. The RCMP, City leadership, and staff were quick to communicate with Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and work with us to uphold our mutual commitment to respectful cultural heritage management.

The area is currently closed, and we request that the public and media avoid the area to allow Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops to complete this important work. We would like to thank the public and encourage everyone to always report potential remains and/or artifacts to the nearest RCMP detachment and Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc. To report to the RCMP, please call 250-314-1800.

For more information, to report artifacts other than remains, or to seek further guidance concerning archaeological sites, you can consult the City of Kamloops Archaeological Sites Bulletin or contact the B.C. Archaeology Branch.
