Overdose Awareness at Tk̓emlúps (TteS)

I was truly honored to attend the International Overdose Awareness Day event on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Moccasin Square Gardens, “To Honour Our Loved Ones Lost.” The event featured a tribute naming board, a drumming circle, a brushing-off ceremony, and a lunch.

Throughout the event, there was an open mic where attendees shared their personal experiences. A resource table was also set up, offering harm reduction information and supplies.

It was great to see the partnership between Interior Health, the First Nations Health Authority, and Qwemtsín Health Society in supporting the work of Sam Riozzi, Mental Health & Addictions Navigator for the Community Services Department of Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc.

Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc meets with RCMP in Kamloops

Tk̓wenem7íple7 Dave attends Jennifer Casey Memorial

On beautiful bright blue sky sunny morning on Thursday August 29,2024 I was able to attend and witness the opening of the new Fulton Field park – home of the Jennifer Casey Memorial — near the Kamloops Airport.

This deeply emotional event brought together many people to honor Captain Jennifer Casey. Captain Casey had served as the public affairs officer for the CF-18 Demonstration Team since November 2018 before joining the Snowbirds 431 Air Demonstration Team. On May 17, 2020, shortly after takeoff, her aircraft lost power and crashed on the north shore of Kamloops, tragically taking her life and seriously injuring pilot Captain Richard MacDougall.

This development of the new Fulton Field park is for honour of Captain Jennifer Casey, her service, and the mission of Snowbirds.

Tk̓wenem7íple7 Dave and Jeremy Kneeshaw at the Ḱwséltkten Farmers and Artisans Market

Last Sunday August 11, 2024, I enjoyed getting out of the house on early Sunday morning to travel over to the Ḱwséltkten Farmers & Artisans Market initiative aiming at supporting First Nations and Indigenous growers, producers and artisans. The market is open from 8am to 2pm at the Kamloopa Powwow Arbour (345 Powwow Trail). This Sunday was extra special as I walked into the Arbour, greeted by the incredible music of our very own Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc member, Jeremy Kneeshaw. A talented songwriter and performer, Jeremy played his unique style of music throughout the event, his gifted singing voice blending perfectly with the beautiful sounds of his Riversong Guitar, made right here in Kamloops.

The Ḱwséltkten Farmers & Artisans Market is great way to helping to support local Indigenous Business and opportunity to spend time visiting with family and friends on Sunday morning.

C7i7elcmenten re Stsillen group

On Friday June 14 TteS Community Services hosted the official opening of C7i7elcmenten re Stsillen (a Place To Share Food). This event brought together community members to celebrate and uphold the traditional Secwépemc values of generosity and sharing.

The event began with a moving prayer by Elder Charlotte Manuel, setting a respectful and spiritual tone for the day. Following the prayer, Manager Priscilla Johnstone and I had the honor of delivering a few opening remarks. Community Services manager Priscilla Johnstone speaks We were joined by community member Vicki Manuel, who shared the significance of generosity in Secwépemc culture, emphasizing the importance of sharing food and resources with our people.

After the opening remarks, attendees enjoyed a delicious BBQ, followed by a beautifully decorated cake. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, conversation, and a true sense of togetherness.

The celebration concluded with draws for some wonderful door prizes, adding an element of excitement and fun to the event. The joy on the faces of the winners was a testament to the community spirit of the day.

Weytkp xwexweytep (Hello Everyone)

I would like to thank leadership of manager Dessa Gottfriedson and her staff at TteS Education Department for hosting amazing community event on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Moccasin Square Garden. I was very blessed to be able to witness the event firsthand watching so many of TteS students stand together and get honoured after school year of hard work.

Nice to see so many of the family and friends show up to event to support our TteS students just tells me that it takes whole community to support academic success for each student.

Having the Language and Culture Department there to support the event with singing welcome song and honour song and having Elders doing prayer for opening and food blessing only adds to pride of what it is to be apart of TteS community spirit. I would also like to say great job to Tkwenem7iple Nikki Fraser for stepping in last minute to be the Master of Ceremony for the event you did wonderful job.

I truly believe each time we gather as people of TteS it is part of developing and healing of our TteS spirit, I will keep doing my best to support theses kind of events like this to gather and stand up our people in beautiful way.
